Eco Factor: Zero-emission aircraft harnesses human-power for a green flight.
The Korean Air Force Academy has announced the development of a pedal-powered aircraft, which uses human power to get off the ground. Dubbed the Sky Runner, the 40kg airplane has a wingspan of 30 meters and is a propeller craft that is to be pedaled during take-off and flight.
During its initial tests the Sky Runner flew 150m and 100m consuming green energy of the pilot. The team accepts that the flight distance is too short, but they hope to better the aircrafts performance through systematic pilot training.
According to the developers, the Sky Runner requires the pilot to pedal and generate some 0.3hp to say in the air for up to 2km. The Air Force Academy started the $290,000 project last year and have made South Korea the world’s fifth country to fly a human-powered aircraft.
