Google’s new software tracks global deforestation

Eco Factor: Software processes decades’ worth of images to track and monitor global deforestation.
After unveiling software tools for ocean mapping and home energy consumption details, Google will now help researchers track and monitor global deforestation using satellite imagery. The tool will help reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

The new software has been designed in association with the Carnegie Institution for Science and Imazon. The program processes decades’ worth of images to extract information about the change in size and shape of tree cover over the years, which provides the exact location where deforestation is at its maximum.
