Eco Factor: LED lanterns powered by solar energy.
Tideland Signal has won the contract to supply sun-powered marine lanterns to mark the coral reef surrounding Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean. The solar lanterns, dubbed the SolaMAX, will help encourage fishing on the outer reef.
The SolaMAX lanterns will be mounted on solid structures in the reef and will show a yellow light visible for up to 5NM. The compact lanterns will feature built-in solar panels that charge a sealed lead acid battery via a solar regulator.
All the electronics are tightly contained within a tough UV-resistant polycarbonate enclosure. The lanterns will only be opened to replace the onboard battery that is slated to have a five year life span.
