Every year tourist hail from across the globe to Goa to enjoy the sun while feeling the white soft sand just below their feet. Just like other popular beach tourism destinations, Goa also doesn’t remain untouched from the effects of climate change. The tourism department announced yesterday that they would be organizing a sand art festival. The three-day Goa sand festival that starts from 18 December will center on the theme ‘global warming’.
The Goa sand festival to be held at Candolim beach is being conducted to make people aware of the sand erosion rampant and the rise in the sea water level threatening 10 percent of Goa’s 105-km coastal stretch. Under this event 11 beautiful sculptures will be carved that will portray the theme of global warming. The reason for choosing Candolim beach for this event is the fact that it is one of the worst affected by rise in sea level and global warming.
Another reason that account for selecting this beach is the good quality of sand, which is just perfect for making sculptures. Over the last decade, approximately 1.1 km of beach along the Candolim-Sinquerim stretch has already eroded.
