Eco Factor: Proposal to turn a light rail line into a sustainable development.
With a new light rail line being proposed for Copenhagen suburbs that will connect 20 development zones with a total area of 11 square kilometers, the Bjarke Ingels Group is proposing a new development that will turn the light rail line into a spine of dense urbanity with a series of peaks at the stations. The plan, dubbed the Loop City, aims to combine the rail with strategies for energy exchange, waste management, water treatment and several electric car stations.
With the inclusion of these sustainable design elements, the infrastructure could become the base for a new “sustainable ring of development” around Copenhagen. The development is such that at certain points the rain becomes a building itself passing through the suburbs, while at some other points it forms small pockets of urbanity around the stations. The architects have also proposed extending the planned light rail to form a regional ring around Oresund and connecting other similar development areas.
