Eco Factor: Sustainable stadium to feature an internal garden that serves as a thermal buffer.
Paris-based practice SCAU in collaboration with Morocco-based Archidesign has won an international competition to design the “Grande Stade De Casablanca” stadium in Morocco that will serve as the home stadium for Morocco National Football Team. The project, which will be built on a 100 hectare quarry site, will include fanned-out concrete fiber blades around its entire perimeter, that will help filter natural light and promote cross ventilation throughout the interior. This unique construction will enable the stadium authorities to reduce energy consumption.

With a capacity to seat about 80,000 spectators, the massive stadium’s form and composition suggests an excavated mineral. The openness of the stadium will help manage the microclimate of the interior while shading it from direct sunlight. The space between the stadium and the open envelope will be filled with a garden that will serve as a thermal buffer and in internal oasis for the visitors. This grand stadium is expected to be completed by 2013.
